Gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums, is an early stage of gum disease. If you have gingivitis, it is essential to receive appropriate treatment because just home care may not be enough to get rid of the plaque that leads to the build-up of tartar and gradually to gum disease. Keep a check on yourself to see if you have these symptoms of gingivitis and get it treated before it progresses to periodontitis.
1. One or more risk factors
If you have certain risk factors, doesn’t mean that you will get gingivitis. But you certainly should be watchful and cautious. You are likely to have gum disease if –
-
You smoke
-
You have a family history of gum disease
-
You have diabetes
-
You are a female going through puberty, pregnancy, or menopause
-
You have a compromised immune system
2. Inflammation of gums
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums and that is the evidential sign of the condition. Gingivitis or periodontitis can be caused due to bacterial infection, and inflammation is your body’s response to infection. The four typical symptoms of inflammation are pain, redness, swelling, and a higher temperature than normal. If you have inflammation around your teeth, your gum disease may have advanced.
3. Loose teeth
Having loose teeth is another important sign of periodontitis or gingivitis. You have loose teeth as a result of losing support around the tooth or teeth. You might also start noticing other signs such as your teeth will be oddly spaced, or start separating from each other. If you use dentures, then you will notice that your partial dentures may not fit properly anymore, even if they are just new.
